Sebastian Piras, was born in Sardinia, Italy where he lived until the age of 18.

Before settling in New York City where he has resided since 1985, he has lived in England, France and Germany. Although photography has been his main interest throughout his life, Sebastian Piras’s other interests, filmmaking and culinary arts have been at alternating times an integral part of his career, to the extent that he has dedicated himself to each one of them with the same unabated passion.


Piras’ main photographic subject has been portraiture, his book “Artists Exposed “, published back in 1996, is a partial collection of captivating portraits of known and unknown players in the international arts scene, such as Andy Warhol and Roy Liechtenstein, to name a few. David Ross, former director of the Whitney Museum, who wrote the introduction for the book, heralded Piras’ photos as:” …probing and extraordinarily beautiful portraits of artists…that ultimately produces winners at both ends of the camera.”

His photographs have been published, exhibited and collected worldwide.
Piras has worked in film as a cameraman/ steadycam operator and in various aspects of production. He has directed and filmed documentaries, including “ Taylor Mead Unleashed”, which also featured the late Allen Ginsberg and Quentin Crisp.

He is currently working on new photography projects as well as digital video projects. On the educational front Piras has been teaching Junior High School children in NY public schools to develop their skills using digital video and photography as a new mean to allow them to express their ideas utilizing new media.
